There are more than 80 restaurants, cafes and sodas on this coast so you won’t be short of choice, however long you are staying!
Do try Costa Rican Caribbean cuisine with its fusion of Jamaican and Tican flavors: this coast is famous for it.
But there are also choices from all around the world here so if you suddenly feel like a Thai, or Italian or Argentinian or Spanish or Middle Eastern meal, there is a restaurant here for you.

Here are a few to wet your appetite but there are plenty more to choose from:

Caribbean Costa Rican

  • Johanna’s, Cocles: In a side street between the bridge and supermarket Super Cocles, Johanna’s serves good Caribbean food.

  • Lidia’s Place, Puerto Viejo: Take a left opposite Hot Rocks and you’ll find Lidia’s at the end of the street: this Caribbean restaurant serves traditional Costa Rican food.

  • Elena Brown’s, Puerto Viejo: Almost next to the bakery, this long-standing Caribbean restaurant serves all the traditional Caribbean dishes.

  • Tamara, Puerto Viejo: Another choice for good local Caribbean food, located on the main street.

  • Maxi’s Manzanillo: Justly famous for its fresh Red Snapper, this atmospheric and popular restaurant serves lunch or dinner overlooking the beach.

  • Selvin’s, Playa Chiquita: Open only on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, this deservedly popular restaurant near Punta Uva beach serves consistently good, fresh Caribbean food: just the place for an early dinner after beach-time!

    International

  • El Refugio, Punta Uva: Tiny (4 tables only), atmospheric, romantic and with delicious food, this Argentinian restaurant has a small but varied menu, the quality is high and service is excellent.

  • Todo es Posible, Puerto Viejo: A small Italian restaurant with outside seating serving home-made pasta and a good Frito Misto (fried mixed seafood).

  • Café Viejo, Puerto Viejo: Lively Italian restaurant serving good quality food and a varied menu.

  • Jungle Love, Playa Chiquita: Nice garden setting with good local and international food and pleasant service.

  • La Pecora Nera, Cocles: This Italian restaurant is expensive but consistently good with innovative food. Their ‘Menu de Degustacion’ (4 or 5 small courses) is the main reason to eat here!

  • La Casita Azul, Cocles: This Spanish restaurant located in a pretty Caribbean house has a varied menu, including authentic tapas and a variety of paellas.

  • Congo Reeff, Puerto Viejo: A new restaurant in the pretty garden at the back of the Lulu Berlu art shop. Original and interesting dishes using tropical ingredients.

Brunch/Lunch Cafes

  • Bread & Chocolate, Puerto Viejo: Famous for consistently good home made products and delicious artisanal chocolates!

  • Casa del Pan, Cocles: Homemade breads and lunch dishes, opposite the soccer field. Now also open in the evenings with barbecue specialities.

  • Mama Mia Pizzeria, Puerto Viejo: A simple small café serving pizzas and specials.

  • Lazlo’s, Puerto Viejo: Next to the Pizzeria, this simple fish café is also open for dinner and offers good meals at reasonable prices.

  • Tasty Waves, Cocles: Young, lively café near Cocles surf beach, daily specials and apparently good tacos.

  • El Sol del Caribe, Cocles: Located opposite Cocles Beach, this serves pizzas, pastas, burgers and Caribbean specials.

  • Dreadnut Cafe, Puerto Viejo: Located near the bus stop in front of the ocean this rustic little café serves a great choice of drinks, organic ice cream, and wholesome lunches.

  • Flip Flop, Puerto Viejo: Cheap & Cheerful this café serves good quality dishes with daily specials.

  • De Paso, Puerto Viejo: Opposite Puerto Viejo bakery this little café serves great fish tacos!

  • Marisqueria Nima, Puerto Viejo: Located opposite the beach and many fishy dishes to choose from.

  • Arrecife, Punta Uva: Handy for the beach this café is a laid-back spot for a relaxing lunch.

  • Punta Uva Lounge: Also handy if you’re at the beach, this restaurant serves the usual staples right in front of Punta Uva beach.

  • Sel & Sucre, Puerto Viejo: Crepes, Waffles, Coffee, Salads and Lunches.

  • Deelite, Puerto Viejo: Opposite the bus stop, try this for Homemade Ice cream!

  • Caribeans, Cocles: Almost opposite the surfers beach, this is the place for delicious organic chocolate, cakes and more.
