Emperadora with Green Tree Frog

I’m in the mood for flowers today… and oh yes, the tropical flowers of Costa Rica are magnificent!
When we first came here in 2006 I didn’t know a Red Ginger from an Emperadora or a Bromeliad from an Orchid despite having lived in various tropical destinations.

Suddenly I was faced with creating a garden on our 2 hectare property and that’s when I started learning about the tropical flowers of Costa Rica. With plenty of help from a friend who owns a nursery I began planting… I planted for more than 2 years!
Today Geckoes garden is full of the tropical flowers of Costa Rica, many given by friends as seedlings or cuttings from their gardens. So now we have a huge collection and variety.

It’s not only the magnificence of the intricate heliconias that’s impressive, but also the size. They are huge! Some of the heliconias can reach at least 6 metres with flowers over a metre long.

Every morning I take my breakfast and wander through the garden with the dogs. It is a beautiful way to begin my day. Every day I see something different — perhaps a new flower or plant has appeared or some bromeliads have dropped from the trees still attached to piece of branch.

Bromeliads are some of my favourites in the garden. They are so diverse and can be transplanted easily. So with a few bromeliads you have instant gardening! Of course the pineapple is also a bromeliad and there is nothing like the intense flavour of a home grown pineapple. Absolutely delicious.

Tropical flowers of Costa Rica constitutes a very long list and most are truly spectacular. Some even look like art creations. Like this one:

The tropical flowers of Costa Rica are just one more significant pleasure of living here and Geckoes garden makes me smile every day at the wonders of nature.

Pura Vida!
